Oil vs air vs hydraulic filters

Editorial team|6 minutes to read

6M oil, 6R air and Vario hydraulics are not interchangeable canisters

Oil, air and hydraulic filters are three circuits. A spin-on that 'looks the same' in the store is how a Vario pump or a 6R intake is scheduled. This page compares three SEROC lines: SRC-TR-OF6120 engine oil for 6M, SRC-TR-AF6R primary air for 6R 150, and SRC-TR-HF724 hydraulic spin-on for 720/724 Vario. Horsepower overlap does not make threads, micron ratings or housings the same.

Engine oil: SRC-TR-OF6120

Spin-on engine oil, M22x1.5, listed for John Deere 6120M and 6155M 6M oil circuits. It is not the 6R 150 oil element. Copy the full suffix from the old canister, including bypass. Oil that shears, or a filter left in bypass, polishes journals and the turbo. Match grade and hours; renew the housing seal when you open the circuit.

Engine air: SRC-TR-AF6R

Primary cylindrical air element for John Deere 6R 150. Dust past a tired seal goes through the turbo into the engine. This is not a 6M oil spin-on with a different label, and it is not the safety (inner) element — that is a second line. If the housing is crushed or the seal face is cut, the element will not save the compressor. Copy OEM-AF-6R150 or AL207892 from the old cartridge.

Hydraulic: SRC-TR-HF724

10-micron hydraulic spin-on for Fendt 720 Vario and 724 Vario circuits. The Vario transmission and hydraulics are not a John Deere 6-series filter. Mixing an oil element into a hydraulic housing, or using a 15-micron engine filter here, is how the next valve or pump is quoted. A clogged return filter is a different line from this pressure-side spin-on. Copy OEM-HF-724 or Fendt-G710 including bypass suffix.

Oil versus air versus hydraulic

  • Black oil, short drain, turbo coking: engine oil circuit (OF6120 on 6M) — not air, not hydraulics
  • Dust in the intake, torn hose, collapsed element: primary air (AF6R on 6R 150) plus the safety element as its own SKU
  • Slow loader, hot oil, valve noise: hydraulic micron and housing (HF724 on Vario) — never an engine spin-on
  • Same diameter in the bin: still three threads, three bypass valves, three machines

Do not mix series because horsepower overlaps

6120M and 6R 150 sit near each other in horsepower tables. Filter threads and air housings do not. 720 Vario and 724 Vario share a hydraulic family that is not a Deere 6-series canister. If the stamp and the parts-book line disagree, send both. Published fit is a shortlist. The filtration cluster article covers intervals; this page is only which circuit you opened.

Lookalike canisters

Spin-on cans share diameters and colours across oil and hydraulic families. Thread pitch and bypass setting do not. A 6M oil filter that threads into a Vario housing, or that almost threads, is not a fit — it is a way to starve a pump or leave the circuit in bypass. Air elements share an outline on the shelf; the seal face, inner diameter and the safety element behind them do not. If the old part is missing, do not pick the nearest millimetre from a photo of a clean filter. Open the housing stamp and the parts-book line for that serial.

Horsepower tables put 6120M next to 6R 150. Filter threads and air housings do not follow those tables. 720 Vario and 724 Vario share a hydraulic family that is still not a Deere 6-series canister. Workshops that stock 'the 150 hp oil filter' as one bin mix these three SKUs. Keep OF6120, AF6R and HF724 on separate shelves and on separate purchase lines.

What to send with the hours

Write which housing you opened: engine oil, primary air, safety air, or hydraulic. Copy the full suffix, including bypass, from the old canister or cartridge. Note hours since the last change and whether the machine sat in dust, chaff or a short drain interval. A safety air element that nobody could see is a different SKU from AF6R; if it was never changed, say so. SEROC quotes B2B from SKU or OEM mark. Listed SKUs are available to quote — they are not a substitute for the stamp on the part you removed.

If oil and hydraulics were both due on the same visit, send two lines, two housings, two suffixes. Do not merge them because both are spin-ons. If the air restriction gauge was in the red, treat primary and safety as two jobs. The filtration cluster article covers intervals; this page is only which circuit you opened and which of the three SEROC lines matches that circuit on the seeded machines.

A clogged return filter, a cabin pollen element and a fuel water-separator are still other lines. This comparison is only engine oil, primary air and the Vario hydraulic spin-on on the three seeded SKUs. If the stamp disagrees with OF6120, AF6R or HF724, send the stamp — do not force a lookalike.
