Workshop checks that protect the new clutch from contamination, misalignment and installation damage

A replacement clutch can fail quickly when the original fault is not corrected or when the engine, flywheel and gearbox are not aligned correctly. Before fitting any parts, use the vehicle manufacturer's workshop information and confirm that the disc, cover and release components are correct for the application.

1. Diagnose before removing the old clutch

Record the original symptoms, including slip, judder, noise, drag or difficult disengagement.
Inspect the clutch cable or hydraulic system, pedal travel, release fork, guide tube and bearings so an external fault is not carried into the new installation.
Confirm the replacement kit against the vehicle, engine, gearbox and flywheel specification before work begins.

2. Inspect the flywheel and locating parts

Inspect the flywheel for heat damage, cracks, scoring, runout and an uneven or dished friction surface. Machine or replace it only within the vehicle and clutch manufacturer's limits.
Check the pilot bearing or bush and replace it when worn, rough or noisy.
Inspect bell housing dowels, mating faces, crankshaft location and gearbox input-shaft alignment. Missing dowels or debris between mating surfaces can create damaging misalignment.

3. Prepare the input shaft and release system

Clean the gearbox input-shaft splines and confirm that the new disc slides freely before installation.
Apply only a very light film of the specified high-temperature spline lubricant, then wipe away the excess. Keep grease and oil away from the friction surfaces.
Check the release fork for cracks, the guide tube for wear and the release bearing for correct orientation and secure seating.

4. Align and install the disc and cover

Fit the clutch disc in the correct direction. Confirm that the hub cannot contact the flywheel or clutch cover.
Use a suitable clutch alignment tool so the disc remains centred while the cover is installed.
Start all cover bolts by hand. Tighten them gradually in a diagonal pattern and finish at the vehicle manufacturer's torque specification.
Do not use impact or air tools on the clutch cover. Uneven tightening can distort the cover, damage the diaphragm mechanism and cause poor release.
After torquing, confirm that the diaphragm fingers are even and that the alignment tool can be removed without force.

5. Refit the gearbox without loading the disc

Support the gearbox throughout installation and keep the input shaft aligned with the clutch and pilot bearing.
Never hang the gearbox from the clutch disc or use the bell housing bolts to pull a misaligned gearbox into place.
Do not force or lever the shaft through the hub. If the gearbox will not seat, withdraw it and correct the alignment.
Verify that all dowels are installed, mating faces are clean and bell housing bolts are tightened to specification.

6. Adjust, test and bed in the clutch

Adjust pedal free play, cable travel or the hydraulic release system exactly as specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
Operate the pedal several times and confirm smooth release, correct return and normal gear engagement before road testing.
Road test gently and avoid abusive launches, excessive slipping or heavy-load starts while the friction surfaces bed in.
Follow the clutch supplier's inspection and break-in schedule, including any required free-play recheck after the initial service period.

Important safety note

A clutch is a safety-critical rotating assembly. Do not install a standard replacement clutch in an application that can exceed its rated engine speed or torque. Performance, competition and modified vehicles require components approved for that duty. When specifications or damage limits are uncertain, stop and obtain qualified workshop or supplier guidance.
