Match media, seat, flanges and actuation before you order a replacement

Knife gate valves sit on slurry, grain, digestate and process lines where a rising-disc gate would pack with solids and refuse to move. Selecting the right valve is about media, pressure, leakage direction, actuation and the face-to-face length of the pipe run — not only the nominal diameter painted on the old body. A valve that 'almost fits' will leak, jam or force the pipework to move, and the next shutdown will cost more than the correct body would have.

Media, seat and gate

Abrasive slurry needs a different seat and gate material than clean water or dry grain. Fibres wrap a gate that does not fully clear the port and leave it half-closed. Bidirectional sealing matters if the line can reverse or if isolation is required from both sides. Ask what the media does at rest: settling slurry that hardens overnight is a different duty from a line that always moves. If the existing valve failed by scoring, do not repeat the same seat compound.

Pressure, flanges and face-to-face

Copy the flange drill, pressure class and face-to-face length from the installed valve unless you are prepared to cut and reweld. A wafer body in a lug pattern, or a longer face-to-face in a tight rack, is a site day lost. Photograph the OEM mark on the body, the tag plate and the actuator before the valve comes out. If the mark is gone, measure and sketch: bore, bolt circle, thickness, and whether the gate rises through a stuffing box or a sealed bonnet.

Actuation and fail position

Handwheel, gearbox, pneumatic or electric actuation must match how often the valve cycles and whether it must fail closed, open or in place on loss of air or power. A slurry line that must not dump into a pit has a different fail-safe than a grain line that must not block a silo. Cycle speed matters: slamming a knife into packed solids shears stems. If the old actuator is reusable, confirm stem dimensions and mounting; 'the same diameter valve' is not a stem match.

  • Keep the OEM mark and a photo of the actuator mount

Replacement practice

Isolate, drain and lock out. Solids left in the chest will score a new seat on the first stroke. Support the pipe so the new body is not asked to pull two flanges together. Torque in a cross pattern. Stroke the valve dry if the manufacturer allows it, then with media, and check packing. Plant lines and machine-mounted valves differ in how you identify them. A slurry pit valve is a process spec: media, pressure, flanges. A valve on a self-propelled mixer or a tanker is also a machine part: you need the make, model and the OEM mark because the bracket and actuator may be unique even when the bore is common. Do not order a catalogue wafer valve into a machine cavity that was designed around a specific face-to-face and a pneumatic cylinder on one side only.

Commissioning should include a leak check at operating pressure and a full stroke timed against the process. If the gate hesitates, solids are still in the chest or the actuator is undersized for the packed media. Do not increase air pressure past the actuator rating to 'make it go'. Strip, clean, and confirm the seat. Keep spare packing and a seat kit for valves that cycle daily; waiting for a full body to ship is how a line stays down for a week.

For food or biogas lines, ask whether the seat compound is compatible with the media and with cleaning chemicals. A valve that survived slurry can swell or crack in acid wash. Do not reuse fasteners that are necked or corroded; flange leaks after a 'simple swap' are often old bolts, not the new body. Tag the open line so nobody starts a pump against a blank. Keep a one-page spec with the valve: media, temperature, pressure class, flange drill, face-to-face, fail position, and the OEM mark. Hand that page to purchasing instead of a photo of the body. If the line is on a tanker or mixer, add make, model and the bracket side the actuator sits on. After install, log the first leak check and the stroke time; a slower stroke a month later is packing or solids, not 'the operator'. Adjacent fittings and gaskets belong on the same order.
